Incorruptible

1 Peter 1:3-5 NIV

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

A couple of days ago I was having some problems with my phone, just a small glitch, it was operating on go-slow. I have a golden mantra whenever I have any technical problem – just reboot and everything will be fixed.

Now whether that is true or not, it actually seems to solve 80% of all glitches I’ve experienced!

It is not pleasant when we get a bug in the system, or a file is corrupted, a favourite piece of fabric furniture begins to fade after years in the sunlight, or the bike you have loved so much starts to rust.

In every area of life, whether physical, emotional, in our thinking, or some other area, we are subject to ‘spoil’, ‘corruption’, ‘glitches’ and ‘decay’; except for ONE!

Our inheritance in Christ. Not only is it free of corruption or decay, it’s brilliance can never fade and it’s quality can never decay or spoil. No matter what is thrown at it, what it is accused of, what troubles occur in this world, it is not shaken, moved, damaged or altered. It is a constant. It is out of this world, safeguarded in heaven for you.

What enables us to be so sure this is ours?!

Peter explains in verse 3 that it becomes ours through rebirth in Christ. In Christ our inheritance isn’t a vague wish, it is a certain hope. He calls it a ‘living hope’; it becomes alive inside of you, an assurance that you are heaven bound.

Because we are human with many glitches and bugs in our system (in case you hadn’t noticed!) it is a rebirth we need, from a DNA line that’s no glitches or bugs; a rebirth in Christ.

In Ephesians 4 Paul makes it clear that the goal is not to remain new born, but to in maturity in Christ.

13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become MATURE, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

So be encouraged today; you are a brand new creation in Christ with an incorruptible inheritance, and a seed of life in you that can never perish, fade or spoil.

But let us also be spurred on to grow in our maturity in Christ by living from this new seed, not from our old seed; and by nurturing the new seed, not the old seed.

Stay tuned to these blogs and together we will explore more of what Peter has to say about growing as a mature, devoted follower of Christ.
